There are a lot of nuances to building a green home. You probably want to create a home that is run by renewable energy.

The most common form of renewable energy is solar power. Residential homeowners spent over $10.4 billion on solar power last year. Many feel solar energy is very advantageous. However, installing solar panels alone isn’t enough.

You also have to make sure that you get the most out of your solar energy system. This means that you have to design your property and setup your solar panels for maximum efficiency.

How Can You Get the Most Efficient Solar Energy System for Your Home?

One of the best decisions you can ever make is deciding to go green by installing solar panels. However, choosing this path comes with the mandate to enhance and maintain your solar panel efficiency for the best return on investment. Here, we look at five tips for improving solar panel efficiency.

1. Invest in powerful solar panels

Not all solar panels are equal, and when choosing these units, it is vital to opt for the most efficient models in the market. To make the best decision, hire seasoned solar specialists who understand the technologies and working mechanisms behind these systems. Keep in mind that there are different types of solar panels, each with unique energy-conversion features that dictate their highest possible output.

By choosing the most powerful solar panels, such as these solar panels in Brisbane, complete with performance-increasing equipment like micro-inverters, you can be confident of a system that generates more energy even when there is little sunshine.

2. Ensure correct installation

If you want a clean energy sustainable home, you must ensure your solar panels are professionally installed to receive optimal sunlight and generate more electricity. Typically, solar panels should face the right direction, and as a general rule, if you are in the southern hemisphere, your solar panels should face true south and vice versa. You should also ensure your solar panels sit at an optimal angle, which is best determined by your area’s geographical latitude. For the best results, always rely on professional solar installers to decide the best orientation and tilt angle for your solar panels.

3. Eliminate shade

Since solar panels generate electricity from sunlight, it is crucial to avoid installing them next to bug buildings or items that will cause shade. You should also actively eliminate shade where these units have been installed, and since tall trees are a major offender, you should call on tree trimming and removal experts whenever you notice shade on your solar array.

4. Clean your solar panels regularly

Studies by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory show that dust accumulation can reduce solar panel output by as high as 50%. To avoid these energy losses, it is vital to professionally clean your solar panels at least once a year to maintain their efficiency. Dirt and dust accumulation on your solar panels will also be significantly reduced when these units are installed at an angle that allows loose particles and debris to wash off in the rain.

5. Monitor your solar panel output

It is crucial to monitor the performance of your solar panels, so you can notice and take action when their efficiency drops. This is easily done by connecting an energy management software to your solar panels for a hands-free way to detect unexpected decreases in your solar panels’ output. Armed with the analytics these tools provide, you will quickly determine the underlying problem with your solar panels and have them addressed before it is too late.

Endnote

While solar panels are a great investment, the best way to make the most of these solar energy generating units is by following these tips to enhance their efficiency.

Eco-friendly buildings are in greater demand than ever. According to SeedScientific, the value of global eco-friendly buildings exceeded $85 billion in 2019.

Are you interested in managing a green building? You should keep reading to learn more.

What Steps Can You Take to Create an Eco-Friendly Office Building?

The terms eco-friendly, carbon footprint, and “going green” have become a lot more popular in recent years. People all over the world are expressing an interest in sustainability and doing more for Mother Earth, which is a noble endeavor. However, while the news is often big on catchphrases, it’s not always good on sharing practical advice.

We decided to share some guidelines to help you make the transition to a more sustainable office building. Here are some great ways to make sure your office space is doing its part to save the planet.

1. Power Your Building with Renewable Energy

Renewable energy is very important these days. One study projects that global companies will spend over $1.9 trillion on renewable energy by 2030.

You will want to try using sustainable energy to run your building. This will cut your energy costs over the long-term and help lower your building’s carbon footprint.

2. Go Paperless

Creating a paperless office seems like a no-brainer. This is a shift many businesses have been trying to implement for decades. The Internet, cloud storage and electronic signatures have made it easier for companies to reduce the amount of paper they produce — saving trees along the way. Of course, with improved technology comes a greater vulnerability to data loss, either via equipment malfunction or malicious attack. To help protect your work look into digital signatures, which are more secure than simple electronic ones.

While the above is all well and good, the truth of the matter is, you probably can’t go completely paperless. The good news is you can still minimize the impact of the paper you use on the environment. Using recycled paper and environmentally-friendly inks for printing, for example. If you have a contracting company or architectural firm, chances are you can’t live without printed blueprints. Using a flat-file blueprint holder can help reduce the chemicals in the air in your office. They also mean you don’t have to fold your prints and that reduces human exposure to the fumes as well.

3. Renovate Your Office Building to Be Greener

Going Green means different things to different people, and again, the news doesn’t always help you figure out how best to do that. A brand-new office building probably has some green features built-in, but what if you work in an older facility? Don’t worry; you can still make a difference.

One way is by adding plants to your space that can actually help clean the air. Just remember, just because it’s green doesn’t mean it has the right sustainable features for your office. Be sure to look for ones that help remove toxins and improve indoor air quality.

4. Go Forth and Recycle

Nearly every office has bins for recycling paper. There will be some under every desk, and most break rooms have a place for employees to put empty cans or bottles. But you can take things a step further. When replacing furniture or equipment, see if any of it can be donated to a good cause in the neighborhood. Lots of schools, non-profits and other groups might be able to get more mileage out of something you no longer need.

When buying that new equipment, look for items that are made with or of recycled materials. This helps reduce your carbon footprint. Used office furniture is also another option as there’s often too much of it discarded worldwide. One company’s trash just might be your treasure, so check out wholesalers or retailers that deal in pre-owned desks, chairs and conference room furnishings.

5. Go Turn Off the Lights

In addition to what we’ve mentioned above, you can also cut back on your electricity usage. Instead of a panel of electric lights above the conference table, make better use of natural light sources like windows and skylights. Add a few mirrors to the room to enhance the effect. In the same vein, amplify any sun shining through windows in the summer and block it in winter to save on heating and cooling energy needs. Who knows? You might just save some money, too.

The idea of helping to preserve the planet for ourselves and for future generations is something most people can agree on. The key is knowing what you can do in your own space to help. Remember, no one can do everything, but everyone can do something — and if we all just did something, wouldn’t that be a great place to start?

Many companies are finding new ways to renovate their buildings to be eco-friendlier. One of the biggest changes they are making is revamping their buildings to use renewable energy. There is actually a huge intersection between sustainable construction and renewable energy.

Companies around the world are projected to spend over $1 trillion on renewable energy by 2027. Many of them are investing heavily already.

Retrofitting a building to be eco-friendlier and rely more on renewable energy isn’t easy. However, it can have huge benefits that will benefit the company for years to come. These companies will save money on energy and have an easier time appealing to customers that care about sustainability. They will also appreciate that they are doing their part to help the planet.

EnGarde is one of the companies that has recently modified its buildings to rely on renewable energy. These changes are going to have huge benefits for years to come.

EnGarde Makes Major Changes to Make Its Buildings Greener – Including Using Renewable Energy

Industries across the world are beginning to find more sustainable ways of manufacturing and this includes the body armor industry. EnGarde is joining the bandwagon, reducing its carbon footprint by switching to renewable energy sources. The company is aggressively taking steps to eventually become carbon neutral and make its buildings eco-friendly.

Located in the Netherlands, EnGarde manufacturers a full range of ballistic vests and other types of body armor that protect customers across the world. EnGarde was founded in 2003 with a mission to safeguard the lives of those who take jobs defending the rights and lives of others.

Carbon Neutral is the Goal

EnGarde is now using sustainable sources of energy to power its office and warehouse and has more than enough to meet its needs. Plans are now being made to completely cover the building’s roof with solar panels, which will generate all necessary electricity.

Furthermore, there are two plants near EnGarde that provide heating for its office and warehouse. These are the Alkmaar BioEnergy Plant (incinerates wood waste that contains glue or paint) and the Waste Incineration Plant. The heat released from these plants produces electricity, which in turn feeds into the district’s heating system. Since EnGarde is within the district, its office and warehouse benefit.

Environmental Benefits

EnGarde is also helping the environment by increasing the durability of its body armor products, which makes their ballistic vests last much longer. When the lifespan of their products is increased, this lowers the demand for the raw materials that go into manufacturing them, while also reduces waste.

Managing Partner of EnGarde, Iwan Luiten offered his insight, “Most ballistic vests being sold globally come with a five-year warranty. This means they have enough wear and tear to require replacement at that time.” He went on to explain, “EnGarde products come with at least a seven-year warranty and some products even come with a ten-year warranty.”

When someone buys a vest with a five-year warranty, they would need to buy two as opposed to just one EnGarde vest with a ten-year warranty. “It may be more profitable for the manufacturer to make a lower-quality product with a five-year warranty,” Mr. Luiten said, “but it definitely doesn’t help the environment much.”

Sustainable Partners

In addition to using these methods to reduce the company’s environmental impact, EnGarde’s actual products also play a role. The materials used to make EnGarde’s ballistic products primarily come from DSM Dyneema and Teijin Aramid. These companies in recent years have made huge strides in lowering their carbon footprints.

Eighty percent of the products made by EnGarde use DSM Dyneema, whose factories are primarily run with solar power. The company is also implementing ways to minimize packaging and waste. They have also developed a Bio-Based Dyneema, created from a biologically based raw material that lowers CO2 emissions.

Teijin Aramid is busy pursuing its own sustainability goals by implementing their Circular Economy Program that actively promotes waste reduction and recycling. In 2021, the company announced plans to build what they call “sustainable value chain alliances” for the purpose of recycling and reusing all ballistic products, minimizing waste.

There are tons of environmental problems that have caused by urbanization, population growth and technological progress. Addressing these issues requires the use of renewable energies, inexhaustible sources of energy with a low environmental impact.

Among the various sectors that consume the most energy in both the US and EU, construction ranks third, behind transport and industry. The construction sector produces environmental pollution through the intensive use of natural resources, from the extraction of raw materials to the demolition phases. It creates a lot of pollution due to the intensive use of construction machinery and the operation of buildings.

The growth of renewable energy in construction has been a boon to the renewable energy industry. A number of investors are benefiting by investing in renewable energy stocks. You should know how to find good energy stocks to trade if you want to take advantage of this trend.

Renewable Energy is Vital to the Future of Sustainable Construction

The shift towards using sustainable architecture by using green construction technology seeks to create healthy, livable and environmentally friendly environments for future generations. By using natural resources intensively, the construction sector threatens the ecological balance and health conditions for humans. Construction activities require the consumption of half of the planet’s energy resources, 42% of which is water. These activities are also responsible for 40% of water pollution, 24% of air pollution and 50% of chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) emissions. It seems imperative that contractors or future owners adopt the use of renewable energies to construct buildings/homes, since in the long term, they will be able to reap the benefits of their investment.

There are 5 different types of energy sources: solar, wind, hydro, biomass and geothermal. Here is an overview of each:

Solar thermal or photovoltaic energy results from solar radiation. Solar thermal energy captures the heat produced by the sun. Photovoltaic energy transforms photons from the sun into electricity.

Wind energy uses the displacement of air masses to produce energy and is the oldest method used by man, including the use of windmills and sailboats.

Hydropower is obtained from the power of water. It relies on tidal movements and wave power, such as with hydro turbines in dams.

Biomass results from the combustion of organic matter (methanization) which is transformed into biogas and allows the production of biofuels.

Geothermal energy uses temperature differentials between the earth surface, water and lower surfaces to create energy.

Among the various renewable energy sources, the use of solar energy tends to prevail in construction. It can be divided into two categories: passive or active solar heating.

In passive solar heating, the term “passive” means that there are no specific installations to harness solar energy. To take advantage of it in a building/home, large south-facing windows (without shading trees) or conservatories if possible, so that the facades and their components can absorb heat during the day and redistribute it inside the house at night when the temperature drops. The passive solar heating system is based on the design and construction materials of the building that act as a collector of solar radiation. The optimization of passive solar heating takes place during the planning of the building construction.

In the case of active solar heating, solar energy transformed into heat results from the absorption of solar radiation by collectors placed near mirrors. The collector consists of water that is heated by solar energy. This water is then transferred to different parts of the building by means of a pump or ventilation, which contributes to the overall heating of the building.

It is important to choose the right passive solar heating system, as it is a good option because it does not require special equipment to operate and therefore does not have any additional cost. However, the active system is more versatile and can be more easily installed in existing buildings, which is more difficult for passive systems as it requires rethinking the design and construction.

Solar energy can also be used by photovoltaic panels with installations that combine a collector, a regulator, storage batteries and an inverter, which generate electrical energy. There are 2 types of photovoltaic installations: those intended for self-consumption and those intended for the electricity grid.

In buildings or homes, wind energy can also be used. In addition to being renewable and non-combustible, is often subsidized by the State. A windmill, a rotor with blades, an electric generator and a mast usually make up a wind installation. In order to optimize the action of the wind as much as possible, the location must be optimal and take into account that there are no elements that impede the passage of the wind. Buildings constructed near the sea, and in isolated or high areas, will have better performance using wind energy.

There are a number of important elements in modern sustainable buildings. One of the most important things that needs to be incorporated into green buildings is renewable or clean energy. This can be even more important than making homes or buildings energy efficient.

There are a number of ways that clean energy can be introduced into new green building projects or utilized in existing buildings. One option to consider is biogas generation.

Benefits of Biogas Generation in Green Buildings

For a large number of people on our planet, environmentally damaging fuels like coal and wood are still the number one source of power for cooking and heating. Sadly, using these materials in households contributes to around 15 billion trees being cut down, and 4 million people dying each year.

One of the best solutions to this problem is biogas, an ecologically friendly, renewable, and safe alternative to these eco-unfriendly materials. The best part? It’s easy to create and you can derive it from almost any organic material in existence. The most popular sources of biogas include:

Food waste

Animal waste

Organic human waste

Agricultural waste (free of all pollutants and chemicals)

Landfill gas

The type of biogas generator, resulting amounts of biogas, and its production time will depend on the type of waste you’re using. Regardless of the generator, it can be invaluable for green building projects.

How is biogas produced

First things first, what is biogas? It’s the result of a natural process called “anaerobic digestion” – the decomposition of organic matter by bacteria in the absence of oxygen. This result is a smokeless, flammable gas that consists of mostly methane, carbon dioxide, small amounts of hydrogen moisture, and trace amounts of other gases.

You can mimic this process on your own. First, you’ll need a suitable vessel to serve as the biogas generator, such as a purpose-built biogas oven, or an industrial biogas production system. The process happens naturally within the reactor, and involves the following steps:

Placing the biological waste inside the reactor.

The biogas generator crushes down the waste into small chunks. It then liquefies them to speed up and facilitate the anaerobic digestion process.

It then heats the biological waste to 37 degrees Celsius, which is the optimum temperature for the microbes to start the biogas production process.

The biogas production process now begins. The fermentation process starts with the microbes feeding on the organic matter in the biogas generator, breaking it down into proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and so on. During the process of anaerobic digestion, these materials turn into methane and carbon dioxide.

The entire process can take anywhere from one hour to three weeks.

Before the resulting biogas is put to use, it needs to go through the process of removing impurities and carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide can then be used for other purposes.

The advantages of biogas generation

There are plenty of things to like about using biogas instead of coal and wood:

It’s clean, plentiful, and renewable. You can use any organic material lying around to generate biogas.

Producing biogas reduces your reliance on other energy sources, such as gas and electricity, allowing you to live a more energy-independent life, reducing your energy costs and consumption.

It helps protect local wildlife and habitats. Unlike other energy sources that require the destruction of wildlife and their homes, biogas only requires waste and a biogas generator.

The disadvantages of biogas generation

That said, biogas production does have some disadvantages, including:

Being less effective in colder regions, due to requiring the optimal temperature of 37 degrees Celsius.

Taking up to several weeks, but only if producing on the industrial level.

All things considered, biogas generation is a quick, easy, and safe alternative to destructive and non-renewable energy sources like coal and wood. Anything from nature can be a source of biogas, and you can even carry out the process yourself, in your own home.

Biogas Generation Can Be Great for Green Building Projects

There are a number of great benefits of using biogas generation in green building projects. It is important to consider these advantages when engaging in green construction.

The world is starting to use more renewable energy sources in place of fossil fuels. These alternatives are necessary for mitigating the effects of climate change in the short and long term. A type called geothermal energy has become more prominent for residential purposes across the country.

What are the ins and outs of geothermal energy? Take a look.

Renewable Energy: Background

If you’re interested in environmental issues, you probably know that the United States uses a lot of fossil fuels. These are the fossilized remains of plants and animals that we burn to create power sources like oil and gas. About 89% of the energy America consumes comes from nonrenewable energy sources in some form.

The process of extracting and burning fossil fuels leads to pollution, deforestation and more. It’s also evident that fossil fuels release carbon into the air. That leads to the increased warming of the Earth. Plus, you should note that fossil fuels aren’t replenishable. We’re tapping into a finite amount of those resources — and soon enough, they’ll be gone.

It’s easy enough to see why renewable energy is a must. These are power sources we can always access because they occur naturally — like the sun. The most present issue with renewable energy is that it’s “flow-limited.” We can’t always generate power from the wind because it’s not continuously blowing, for example.

A Summary of Geothermal Energy

This is one of the most common types of renewable energy. The essence of geothermal energy is straightforward. It’s generated by using heat that comes from the sub-surface of the Earth via water or steam. You can use geothermal energy for both heating and cooling purposes.

The best place to locate geothermal energy is near tectonic plate boundaries where volcanoes and fumaroles are located. If you’ve ever heard of the Ring of Fire, you already know one place where geothermal sources are plentiful. In the United States, the Southwest has the most abundant access to geothermal resources.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Geothermal Energy

Various countries, like Iceland, almost exclusively use geothermal to power homes and businesses. The most significant sell point is it can work year-round despite varying weather conditions in different climates. Geothermal also operates at high capacities, and it’s easier to maintain and lasts longer than HVAC systems.

Like other renewable resources, it’s challenging to cheaply integrate geothermal technology into the country’s overarching energy system. You can also only implement geothermal plants in particular regions. You also need electricity to power heat pumps.

How Is Geothermal Energy Used Currently?

It’s most common for individuals to install geothermal systems themselves. The majority of homes in America were built before renewable energy was even considered for residential purposes. That means it’s up to you to put in the geothermal heat pump yourself. But this situation is slowly changing.

It’s becoming more popular to use geothermal while building new construction homes. Traditionally, you’d almost always outfit a house for an HVAC system — but energy conservation can be tricky when those appliances aren’t adjusted correctly. The solution is renewable energy.

There are projects popping up across the country that use geothermal energy. These alternatives are being implemented in entire communities as a way to mitigate upfront costs. This price tag of nearly $10,000 continues to be the largest deterrent for those who want to install sustainable energy systems.

Obstacles in the Way of Mainstream Geothermal Energy

What are other obstacles aside from cost preventing geothermal energy from becoming mainstream?

A significant hurdle is education. If you don’t know the benefits of geothermal energy, why would you advocate to install systems in your projects? Learning about the perks of renewable possibilities as a whole can ensure these alternatives become more popular. That goes for advantageous for the project, like less noise pollution, too.

Gearing the responsibility toward developers is also smart. The average homeowner will rarely choose to install a geothermal pump when they could put that money toward a kitchen remodel. By investing in this alternative as a builder, you can enjoy positive outcomes for years — even if you don’t see them immediately.

Land development is another consideration. There’s a lot of planning that goes into implementing geothermal for entire communities. Allocating space for geothermal grids like you would water lines is an effective way to get developers acquainted with this alternative energy. An integrated system will also help mitigate costs.

The Future of Geothermal Energy

There’s no denying that renewable energy as a whole is becoming more prevalent. That said, it’ll take time for options like geothermal energy to turn into household names. The transition will continue to be a gradual shift.

This point doesn’t mean it’s not looking good for renewable energy. There are various cities around the world working to incentivize sustainable ventures in building projects. In Austin, Texas, all new construction must be net-zero energy. These aspects are a significant indicator that a rise in geothermal and other power sources might be on the horizon.

We also can’t underestimate the power of sustainable living. More people make green choices every day. In fact, you’re in the minority if you don’t want to switch to these habits. This desire to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle is one that could help geothermal thrive. Energy is a huge part of climate change, after all.

The best way for residential developers to advocate for geothermal energy is to showcase advantages the right way. It might cost a significant amount to install, but you see the savings immediately when you compare energy bills. Builders should also forgo discussing technical aspects with homeowners. It’s more effective to tell them this system will require less maintenance, for instance.

It Won’t Be Long Before More Residents Want Green Power

At the end of the day, it’s evident that geothermal has a bright future. There are already development projects around the country installing grids to ensure every home has access to those capabilities. The switch will take time, but you might be seeing more geothermal systems pop up sooner rather than later.
